Sleep and nighttime health: Managing insomnia and frequent urination

Common sleep and nighttime disruptions, such as insomnia and frequent urination, can often be managed through lifestyle adjustments and an understanding of biological triggers.

Regarding sleep quality, melatonin and magnesium are frequently used supplements. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates the circadian rhythm and is most effective for issues related to sleep timing, such as jet lag or shift work. However, it may not address insomnia caused by anxiety or poor sleep habits. Magnesium and melatonin serve different roles, and users should consult professionals as melatonin can cause side effects like dizziness or nausea.

To address nocturia, or frequent nighttime urination, managing fluid intake is a key strategy. Reducing large amounts of liquid two to three hours before bedtime can help prevent bladder fullness. While limiting fluids may reduce the frequency of waking up, it is important to note that nighttime urination can also be caused by caffeine consumption, certain medications, or medical conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia in men.
