Sleep apnea and nocturnal awakenings: causes and treatments

Sleep apnea is a respiratory disorder characterized by temporary narrowing or closure of the soft tissues in the throat during sleep, leading to breathing pauses that can last from seconds to minutes. In Germany, this condition affects approximately 30 percent of men and 13 percent of women. Symptoms include loud snoring, irregular breathing, non-restorative sleep, daytime fatigue, and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea include CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy, which uses a mask to keep airways open, or surgical interventions. Under certain conditions, individuals with sleep apnea may qualify for a degree of disability (GdB) status.

Other factors contributing to nighttime awakenings include nocturia (frequent urination), acid reflux caused by late meals, and physical pain. Addressing lifestyle factors, such as adjusting fluid intake or meal timing, can often mitigate these disruptions, though persistent issues require medical evaluation.
