Sleep apnea remains largely undiagnosed despite growing awareness

Sleep apnea is a chronic sleep disorder affecting an estimated 83.7 million adults in the United States and nearly 1 billion people worldwide. The condition is slightly more common in men (59 % of cases) than women (41 %).

Even as public awareness rises, diagnosis rates lag behind the prevalence. Many sufferers do not recognize their symptoms—such as loud snoring, daytime fatigue, low libido, morning headaches, or cognitive difficulties—until a partner points them out. Because the primary signs occur during sleep, the disorder often goes unnoticed.

Untreated sleep apnea can lead to serious health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, cognitive impairment, and reduced lifespan. Greater education about the condition’s subtle signs is essential for earlier detection and preventative care.
