Sleep deprivation and its effects on skin health

Sleep deprivation has a direct impact on skin health, as the body utilizes rest periods for essential repair and recovery processes. Lack of sleep can lead to dullness, dryness, inflammation, redness, and increased sensitivity. It can also impair the skin's barrier function and its ability to recover from daily environmental stress.

One of the most visible consequences is eye puffiness, often caused by fluid accumulation around the eyelid tissues. While sleep is a major factor, other contributors include alcohol consumption, high salt intake, allergies, certain medications, and sleeping positions. Dark circles are also influenced by genetics, aging—which leads to the loss of collagen and elastin—and the displacement of facial fat.

To mitigate mild inflammation and revitalize the eye area, experts suggest several home remedies: applying cold chamomile compresses to promote vasoconstriction, using fresh cucumber slices for hydration, or performing gentle massages with almond oil to stimulate lymphatic drainage.
