Sleep deprivation and nervous system health
Research highlights the significant connection between sleep patterns, the nervous system, and metabolic health. Chronic stress and sleep deprivation can lead to a state of nervous system dysregulation, manifesting through symptoms such as persistent fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, and digestive issues.
A meta-analysis of 41 randomized controlled studies indicates that sleep restriction significantly increases subjective hunger. On average, participants consumed approximately 253 additional calories per day when sleep was limited. This occurs due to changes in brain responses to food stimuli, particularly in areas governing reward and behavioral control, making food appear more tempting.
Conversely, increasing sleep duration can aid weight management. A clinical trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine involving adults with high body weight showed that those who increased their sleep by approximately 1.2 hours per night consumed an average of 270 fewer calories per day within just two weeks, without changes to diet or physical activity.
