Sleep deprivation impacts cognitive performance and memory
Sleep deprivation following intense social events or long periods of activity can significantly impair cognitive functions, including attention, reasoning, and learning. According to psychology experts, sleep is essential for consolidating memory and regulating attention; without it, the brain struggles to organize information and strengthen connections necessary for learning.
Common impacts of insufficient sleep include a reduced ability to maintain focus, increased difficulty in absorbing new information, and challenges in decision-making.
A study conducted by researchers at McGill University and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggests that short bursts of activity may mitigate some of these effects. The research, which involved 54 healthy young adults, found that a 20-minute session of aerobic exercise on a stationary bike helped preserve episodic memory after a period of acute sleep deprivation. This effect was comparable to the benefits observed from a 90-minute nap. However, researchers noted that these findings stem from a controlled laboratory setting and may not fully compensate for chronic sleep loss in everyday life.
