Sleep deprivation impacts memory and gut microbiota health
Recent scientific research highlights the diverse physiological impacts of sleep deprivation on memory and gut health.
A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise can help protect memory following prolonged wakefulness. In a controlled experiment involving adults awake for 30 consecutive hours, participants who performed 20 minutes of stationary cycling or took a 90-minute nap showed approximately 22% better memory performance compared to a control group that remained seated.
Separately, findings presented at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting indicate that chronic sleep loss alters the gut microbiota. This disruption of the intestinal ecosystem can lead to dysbiosis, characterized by inflammation, digestive issues, and a weakened intestinal barrier. Such changes may also influence the immune system and, in experimental models, have been linked to the progression of colorectal cancer and reduced chemotherapy efficacy.
