Sleep deprivation impacts women's health and memory

Recent data from Brazil's Ministry of Health indicates that 20% of Brazilians sleep less than six hours per night, while 31.7% report insomnia symptoms. For women, poor sleep quality is linked to significant physiological consequences, including disruptions to metabolism, hormonal regulation, menstrual cycles, and libido. Experts note that insufficient rest can increase appetite for high-calorie foods and hinder weight management by affecting insulin sensitivity.

Regarding cognitive effects, a study published in PNAS suggests that short-term interventions can mitigate memory loss caused by sleep deprivation. Research involving participants kept awake for 30 hours showed that a 90-minute nap or 20 minutes of physical exercise improved memory retention by approximately 21% to 23% compared to a control group that only rested. These findings provide evidence that brief naps or light activity can help the brain process and encode new information when a full night of sleep is unavailable.
