Sleep deprivation impairs brain function and hormone balance
Scientific research shows that staying awake for extended periods rapidly degrades cognitive performance. After 24 hours without sleep, reaction time and decision‑making slow to a level comparable with mild alcohol intoxication. By 36 hours, micro‑sleep episodes appear, and by 48–72 hours the brain experiences severe fatigue, hallucinations and distorted perception.
Prolonged lack of sleep also disrupts the body's hormonal regulation, weakening the immune response, altering appetite control, and affecting metabolism and cardiovascular health. While a single night of reduced sleep mainly causes temporary tiredness, chronic sleep deprivation raises the risk of serious illnesses and accidents.
These findings underline that sleep is not merely rest but a critical period for the brain and the body's systems to repair and reset, much like nightly maintenance in a workshop.
