Sleep deprivation linked to glaucoma and metabolic health risks

Recent scientific research highlights the significant health risks associated with chronic sleep deprivation. An analysis of data from nearly 500,000 participants in the UK Biobank suggests a link between sleep disturbances and an increased risk of developing glaucoma. Specifically, insufficient sleep was associated with an 8% increase in risk, insomnia with a 12% increase, and frequent daytime sleepiness with a 20% increase.

Beyond vision health, experts warn that regular lack of quality sleep can contribute to cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Chronic sleep deficiency can also lead to metabolic disorders and systemic inflammation as the body relies on increased cortisol and adrenaline to compensate for fatigue.

Medical professionals recommend that most adults aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night to maintain optimal long-term health. They note that individuals accustomed to short sleep cycles may fail to recognize their own impairment, as the brain adapts to a lower baseline of energy and functioning.
