Sleep disorders identified as major public health concern

Experts from the Societat Catalana de Neumologia have warned that sleep disorders represent a major public health issue. Data suggests that one in three citizens will experience sleep problems during their lifetime.

In Catalonia, it is estimated that between 300,000 and 600,000 people may suffer from sleep apnea, though many cases remain undiagnosed. Dr. Núria Grau, a pulmonologist and coordinator of the society's sleep group, emphasized that quality rest is a fundamental necessity for health, comparable to proper nutrition and physical activity.

Factors contributing to declining sleep quality include stress, irregular schedules, and excessive screen use before bed. Obstructive sleep apnea, caused by the repeated collapse of the airway during sleep, can lead to serious cardiovascular consequences, including hypertension, diabetes, stroke, and arrhythmia. Experts recommend maintaining regular routines, exposure to sunlight, and moderate exercise to improve sleep hygiene.
