Sleep duration and biological aging linked to U-shaped curve
New scientific research suggests that the relationship between sleep duration and biological aging follows a U-shaped curve. A study published in Nature by the MULTI Consortium, utilizing data from the UK Biobank involving individuals aged 37 to 84, indicates that both insufficient and excessive sleep are associated with accelerated biological aging across various organs.
The study found that the smallest gap between biological and chronological age typically occurs within a sleep range of 6.4 to 7.8 hours, though this varies by sex and specific organ. Deviating from this middle range—specifically sleeping less than 6 hours or more than 8 hours—is linked to an increased risk of systemic diseases and mortality.
While adults generally require 7 to 8 hours of sleep to recover physically and mentally, sleep quality plays a critical role. During sleep, the brain filters external stimuli, allowing for energy recovery and cognitive rest. Factors such as sleep debt, caused by poor habits or environmental issues, can significantly impact the effectiveness of rest and the body's ability to reach optimal performance levels.
