Sleep duration and genetics linked to biological aging and Alzheimer’s risk

Recent scientific studies have highlighted the critical connection between sleep patterns, genetics, and biological aging. Research published in the journal Nature suggests that sleeping between 6 and 7 hours per night is associated with more favorable indicators of biological aging. The study found that both insufficient sleep (less than 6 hours) and excessive sleep (more than 8 hours) are linked to more pronounced signs of aging in the brain and body.

Complementary research from Edith Cowan University, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia, explores how sleep interacts with specific genetic variants to influence cognitive decline. The study focused on the AQP4 gene, which regulates brain fluid movement and the overnight removal of waste products. Researchers discovered that individuals with certain AQP4 variants experienced faster grey matter loss when reporting shorter sleep durations.

These findings suggest that sleep is a vital modifiable lifestyle factor that can interact with an individual's genetic profile to affect long-term brain health and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
