Sleep duration linked to brain changes and Alzheimer's biomarker
A meta‑analysis of 57 structural neuroimaging studies on adults with various sleep disorders identified a consistent reduction in gray‑matter volume of the thalamic pulvinar, a region involved in attention filtering. In studies focusing on parasomnias, the posterior cingulate cortex also showed reduced thickness, suggesting distinct structural impacts across sleep‑related conditions.
Separately, analysis of 2,410 participants from the long‑running Framingham Heart Study (average age ≈ 70) revealed that individuals who habitually slept more than 8½ hours per night had higher blood levels of the protein p‑tau181, a recognized early biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease. The association grew stronger for those reporting roughly 10 hours or more of sleep, indicating that unusually long sleep may signal underlying neurodegenerative changes rather than confer added health benefits.
