Sleep experts offer advice for upcoming winter time transition

As the transition to winter time approaches on October 25, sleep experts are warning that shifting the clock can disrupt natural circadian rhythms, leading to difficulties falling asleep or waking up earlier than usual.

Sleep expert Dr. Allie Hare recommends several strategies to ease the adjustment. To help the body align with the new schedule, individuals should gradually shift their bedtime and dinner times by approximately 15 minutes each night in the weeks leading up to the change. This approach assists both the brain's internal clock and the digestive system's rhythm in regulating sleep.

Additionally, optimizing the sleep environment is advised. Experts suggest decluttering the bedroom and using dim, soothing lighting to create a calm atmosphere. Maintaining a consistent routine where the bed is used primarily for sleep can also help the brain associate the space with rest.
