Sleep experts highlight common habits that sabotage rest

Health specialists explain that everyday actions can silently impair sleep quality. Irregular bedtimes, exposure to bright or blue light from screens or room lighting, high bedroom temperature, noise, uncomfortable mattresses, caffeine or alcohol consumption late in the day, and stressful thinking are all cited as factors that prevent deep, restorative sleep. Maintaining a consistent sleep‑wake schedule, creating a dark, cool, and quiet bedroom, limiting screen use before bedtime, and avoiding stimulants in the evening can help restore normal melatonin production and improve regeneration during sleep.

A separate expert response notes that eye masks that block all light, including blue wavelengths, can aid falling asleep by preventing stray light from reaching retinal ganglion cells that regulate circadian rhythms. By reducing light exposure below about 5‑8 lux, melatonin synthesis is less disrupted, supporting quicker sleep onset for individuals who cannot achieve complete darkness otherwise.
