Sleep experts identify key differences between insomniacs and healthy sleepers

Experts have identified several key behavioral differences between individuals suffering from insomnia and those who consistently achieve seven or more hours of sleep per night.

According to sleep practitioner Sam Sadighi and sleep researcher Mike Wakeman, common patterns among insomniacs include irregular sleep schedules, which disrupt the body's internal circadian rhythm, and the tendency to force sleep. The latter often involves clock-watching and experiencing automatic negative thoughts regarding the inability to function the following day, which increases stress and further delays sleep.

In contrast, individuals who sleep well often maintain consistent bedtimes and wake-up times, establish relaxing nighttime routines, and ensure adequate exposure to daylight. While these habits support better rest, experts note that good sleep hygiene may not be sufficient to treat chronic insomnia, and those with persistent issues should consult a medical professional.
