Sleep health experts recommend optimal napping and daily routines

Medical experts provide guidance on optimizing sleep quality through proper napping techniques and daily routines. To effectively manage sleep debt, experts recommend napping between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM for approximately 10 to 20 minutes. Staying in a light sleep stage helps avoid sleep inertia, the grogginess felt after waking. Sitting in a chair rather than lying down may also prevent entering a deep sleep state that disrupts nighttime rest.

Establishing a 24-hour circadian rhythm is essential for long-term sleep health. Recommended morning habits include exposure to sunlight and eating breakfast within an hour of waking. During the day, avoiding excessive naps on commutes and reducing external stimuli can help maintain alertness.

For evening routines, experts suggest dimming lights three hours before bed and finishing baths one hour before sleep to allow body temperature to drop. Other tips include avoiding caffeine in the afternoon, limiting snacks after dinner, and using warm eye masks to facilitate relaxation.
