Sleep Health Experts Warn About Risks of Falling Asleep Too Quickly or Too Slowly

Experts say that falling asleep within 10–20 minutes is typical, but falling asleep in under a minute can signal chronic sleep deprivation or other health issues, while taking longer than 20 minutes may indicate insomnia. Both extremes are linked to higher risks of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and early mortality.

Insomnia is associated with stress, anxiety, depression, hormonal changes, and other medical conditions such as sleep apnea and restless‑leg syndrome. Women and older adults are particularly vulnerable. Persistent sleep problems should prompt a medical evaluation.

Recommended sleep hygiene includes keeping a consistent bedtime, limiting screen exposure before sleep, maintaining a cool and dark bedroom, and seeking professional help if difficulty falling asleep occurs three nights a week for three months.
