Sleep health: Strategies for better rest and risks of sleep apnea

Maintaining high-quality sleep is essential for physical and mental health. Improving sleep hygiene involves several key habits, such as avoiding blue light from screens at least 45-60 minutes before bed to support melatonin production, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule to regulate the circadian rhythm, and optimizing the bedroom environment with temperatures between 18°C and 20°C. Additionally, avoiding heavy meals, alcohol, and caffeine in the late afternoon or evening can prevent disruptions to deep sleep.

Beyond lifestyle habits, medical conditions like Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can severely impact health. OSA occurs when soft tissue in the throat relaxes and partially or fully blocks the airway, causing repeated interruptions in breathing and drops in blood oxygen levels. This condition is more than just snoring; it is linked to serious health risks, including hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, and stroke, as the brain must repeatedly trigger brief awakenings to restore breathing.
