Sleep hygiene and strategies for improving rest

Sleep disturbances are common across various age groups, with infants requiring up to 16 hours of sleep and teenagers needing approximately 8 hours. Experts suggest that establishing consistent sleep schedules and healthy habits is essential for improving sleep quality.

To facilitate falling asleep, it is recommended to limit exposure to blue light from electronic devices, such as phones and laptops, as it can disrupt melatonin production. For children, beds should be reserved primarily for sleep and reading rather than homework to maintain a mental association with relaxation.

If sleep does not occur within 30 minutes of lying down, experts advise leaving the bed and moving to another room to perform low-engagement, boring activities under dim lighting, such as reading or knitting. Relaxation techniques, including deep breathing, can also assist in regulating the body's natural sleep rhythm.
