Sleep hygiene limitations and medical sleep disorders
While sleep hygiene—such as maintaining consistent schedules, limiting blue light, and managing caffeine intake—can address behavioral barriers to rest, it is not a universal solution for all sleep issues. In 2024, approximately 30.5% of U.S. adults reported sleeping fewer than seven hours per night.
Medical conditions including sleep apnea, insomnia disorder, restless legs syndrome, and circadian rhythm disorders may not be resolved by lifestyle changes alone. These underlying physiological, neurological, or psychological issues require different interventions. Chronic insufficient sleep is linked to increased risks of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, anxiety, and depression.
