Sleep patterns and the impact of wearable technology

Waking up consistently between 3:00 and 4:00 AM can be a source of frustration, often linked to various physiological and psychological factors. While such interruptions do not automatically indicate a specific medical disorder, they are frequently influenced by stress, anxiety, and changes in daily habits. During sleep, the brain moves through several cycles, including lighter phases where environmental factors like noise or temperature changes can trigger wakefulness. Stressful life events, such as professional or family concerns, can keep the brain in a state of alert even during rest.

In tandem with these patterns, many individuals are turning to smartwatches to monitor their sleep quality, analyzing data on sleep duration and cycles, such as deep and REM sleep. However, some users may develop an obsession with these metrics, which can potentially lead to further sleep disturbances. There are also scientific concerns regarding the accuracy of these devices. While smartwatches use algorithms to analyze movement, heart rate, and body temperature, they cannot measure brain activity. Consequently, experts note that these devices are not medical-grade instruments and may lack precision in identifying specific sleep phases.
