Sleep plays a critical role in memory consolidation, study finds
A 2025 meta-analysis published in the scientific journal eLife has highlighted the critical role of sleep in memory consolidation. The study, which analyzed data from 23 studies and 297 effect sizes, identified a strong association between the coupling of slow oscillations and sleep spindles during deep sleep and the ability to retain information.
Neurologist Renato Gama, a professor at Afya Educação Médica, explains that the brain does not simply shut down during sleep. Instead, it undergoes essential processes to reorganize information acquired during wakefulness, strengthening neuronal connections to transform recent data into stable, long-term memories. Consequently, sleep is a fundamental part of the learning process rather than an interruption to it.
