Sleep quality and brain activity linked to Alzheimer's risk
Recent scientific studies have identified significant links between sleep quality and the risk of Alzheimer's disease and neurodegeneration. Research from the University of Liège indicates that sleep interruptions, specifically micro-awakenings lasting between 3 and 15 seconds, may serve as early markers for Alzheimer's in adults aged 50 to 69. These interruptions can disrupt deep sleep, potentially promoting the accumulation of amyloid and tau proteins. Additionally, changes in the locus coeruleus, a small brain region, have been linked to sleep quality and Alzheimer's indicators.
Complementary research from Edith Cowan University suggests that certain variants of the AQP4 gene interact with sleep patterns; for carriers, short sleep or difficulty falling asleep is associated with accelerated gray matter loss and cognitive decline.
An international study involving researchers from Concordia University and the Universitat de Lleida found that specific brain waves during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep may offer protection against cognitive decline. While elevated levels of the neurotransmitter orexin are associated with increased vulnerability to Alzheimer's symptoms and inflammation, individuals with stronger sleep spindles and oscillations showed greater neural resilience against these negative effects.
