Sleep quality and its impact on health and relationships

Sleeping with a partner can enhance emotional connection and security, potentially extending REM sleep. However, issues such as snoring, sleep apnea, differing sleep rhythms, and disputes over bedding can diminish sleep quality and impact relationship dynamics.

Pierre-Alexis Geoffroy, a psychiatrist and sleep medicine expert at Université Paris Cité, notes that sleep quality is as vital to health as nutrition and exercise. He highlights that sleep deprivation is a leading cause of death globally, linked to increased cardiovascular risks and cognitive issues.

To mitigate snoring, which occurs when airflow is obstructed, experts suggest sleeping on one's side rather than the back to prevent airway narrowing. Other contributing factors include alcohol consumption, which relaxes throat muscles, and certain dietary habits like consuming heavy meals or high amounts of salt before bed. Maintaining a bedroom temperature between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius and using appropriate pillows can also improve sleep hygiene.
