Sleep quality factors and the nutritional benefits of pistachios

Sleep difficulties often stem from a complex combination of stress, daily habits, hormonal imbalances, and underlying medical conditions. Chronic poor sleep can lead to reduced attention, memory issues, decreased stress tolerance, and difficulties regulating blood glucose and blood pressure.

Common causes include mental hypervigilance, anxiety, and excessive nervous system activation, where the mind remains active despite physical exhaustion.

Research from Columbia University suggests that dietary choices can support sleep quality. A study highlights pistachios as a beneficial food option due to their nutritional profile. Pistachios contain tryptophan, which helps synthesize serotonin and melatonin, as well as phytomelatonin. Additionally, the presence of magnesium and vitamin B6 aids in the synthesis of GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain relax. The synergistic effect of these nutrients, along with fiber and polyphenols, may support the gut-brain axis to promote better rest.
