Sleep quality factors: Pet companionship and lighting design

Experts are highlighting various factors that influence sleep quality, ranging from domestic habits to environmental design.

Sharing a bed with pets can offer emotional benefits, such as reducing anxiety and cortisol levels. Research from Washington State University indicates that petting a pet for ten minutes can lower stress. However, specialists note that the health impact depends on the individual, specifically regarding allergies or immunosuppression. In the United States, more than half of pet owners sleep with their animals, while in Argentina, pet coexistence is common in roughly 80% of households.

Environmental factors, particularly lighting, also play a critical role in regulating circadian rhythms. To support melatonin production, experts recommend using warm color temperatures between 2200K and 2700K and avoiding cool white lights. Recommended strategies include using layered lighting—such as dimmable floor lamps and task lighting—rather than a single central overhead light, and utilizing blackout curtains to mitigate urban light pollution.
