Sleep quality linked to brain alertness and dementia prevention
Recent scientific research highlights the critical connection between sleep quality and brain health, specifically regarding cognitive maintenance and the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.
A study involving 52 adults examined the relationship between REM sleep and the locus coeruleus, a small brainstem nucleus that produces noradrenaline to regulate alertness and attention. Findings suggest that the intensity of REM sleep, measured by theta wave energy, is linked to how the locus coeruleus functions during waking hours, influencing attention and stimulus response.
Furthermore, sleep plays a vital role in protecting the brain from dementia through the glymphatic system. During deep sleep, particularly slow-wave sleep, the brain undergoes a metabolic cleaning process. Glial cells facilitate the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to remove toxic proteins, such as beta-amyloid and tau, which are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Inadequate sleep can hinder this drainage process, increasing the risk of protein accumulation and cognitive decline.
