Sleep quality research explores Scandinavian methods and body positioning

Experts are examining various methods and positions to improve sleep quality and minimize physical discomfort. One approach, known as the Scandinavian sleeping method, involves couples sharing a bed but using separate blankets. This practice, common in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, allows individuals to regulate their own temperature and provides more personal space while maintaining proximity.

Behavioral scientist Vendi Troxsel notes that this method can satisfy the need for closeness while reducing disturbances caused by a partner moving or fighting for covers.

Regarding physical positioning, research indicates that most people change positions throughout the night, with side-sleeping being the most common. While there is no single optimal position for everyone—as factors like age, weight, and pregnancy play a role—certain positions may impact health. For instance, sleeping on the right side may exacerbate stomach issues like acid reflux for some individuals.
