Sleep Schedule Regularity Affects Blood Pressure and Weight Gain
Cardiologist Dr Sanjay Bhojraj advises a consistent sleep‑wake schedule—going to bed and rising at the same time each day, including weekends—to help control blood pressure. An American Heart Association analysis of 12,287 adults in 20 countries found that bedtime variability over 30 minutes raises hypertension risk by 32 %, and variability over 90 minutes raises it by 92 %.
A separate study by Columbia University researchers, published in Science Translational Medicine, showed that cutting sleep by about 80 minutes per night for six weeks caused participants to gain an average of 500 grams, increase sedentary time and raise metabolic risk. About 30 % of adults regularly sleep only five to six hours, making moderate sleep loss a common health concern.
