Sleep‑Related Breathing Disorders Linked to Dementia Risk and Child Health Alerts

A Brazilian study found that adults with sleep apnea have a higher risk of developing dementia after age 40, suggesting that repeated breathing interruptions may promote brain changes linked to memory loss. The research, based on self‑reported apnea data, noted limitations such as lack of longitudinal follow‑up and no confirmation by polysomnography.

In Peru, doctors warned that mouth breathing, frequent snoring, and drooling during sleep can signal a respiratory obstruction in children. Specialists emphasized early evaluation to prevent complications such as dental malocclusion, facial bone growth issues, and potential progression to adult sleep apnea. Diagnostic tests may include imaging of the adenoids and allergy assessments, and surgical correction is considered for persistent cases.
