Süleyman Hilmi Tunahan and the Süleymancılar movement

Süleyman Hilmi Tunahan (1888–1959) was a religious scholar and the founder of the movement known as ‘Süleymancılık’. Born in Razgrad, Bulgaria, he received high-level academic training in Istanbul, specializing in tafsir and hadith, and earning the title ‘Dersiâm’. He is regarded by followers as the 33rd link in the Nakshibendi ‘Golden Chain’.

Following the closure of madrasas in 1924, Tunahan conducted religious education in clandestine locations, including train compartments and basements, to avoid state pressure. After the political shifts of 1950, the movement expanded its Quranic education activities across Turkey.

The community has been led by several figures following Tunahan, including his son-in-law Kemal Kacar, his grandson Arif Ahmet Denizolgun, and currently Alihan Kuriş. The group established Islamic cultural centers in Germany following the labor migration of 1961. Members emphasize strict discipline and spiritual secrecy, often viewing themselves as a ‘Noah’s Ark’ of salvation. The community has also been noted for its involvement in politics and specific theological interpretations regarding social and economic practices.
