Abuna Jemata Guh church in Ethiopia requires extreme climbing to reach
The Abuna Jemata Guh church in the Tigray region of Ethiopia is noted for its extreme accessibility challenges and historical significance. Carved into a cliffside, the 1,500-year-old Orthodox sanctuary requires visitors to undertake a demanding hike lasting over an hour.
To reach the site, travelers must climb an 8-meter vertical rock face using only their hands and feet with the assistance of local residents. The path continues along a narrow trail situated just centimeters away from a precipice nearly 250 meters high. Despite the difficulty, the interior houses well-preserved frescoes believed to date back to the 15th century, maintained by the region's dry climate.
