Slobodan Šnajder, acclaimed Croatian writer and dramatist, dies at 78
Renowned Croatian writer, dramatist, and publicist Slobodan Šnajder has passed away at the age of 78. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Tena Šnajder.
Born in Zagreb in 1948, Šnajder was a prominent intellectual whose work often explored themes of fascism, anti-fascism, and the intersection of art and politics. He was a co-founder and editor of the theater magazine Prolog and studied philosophy and English studies. Much of his dramatic work, including his acclaimed play ‘Hrvatski Faust’, gained significant international recognition, particularly in German-speaking regions, even when it faced marginalization or political friction within Croatia.
Šnajder lived much of his life as an emigrant in Germany after leaving Croatia during the Tuđman era. His literary output included several notable novels, such as ‘Doba mjeseca’ and his most recent work, ‘Anđeo nestajanja’. His plays were noted for their political engagement and were often influenced by the poetics of Bertolt Brecht.
