Slovak Academy of Sciences opposes new EU NGT regulations

The Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) has issued a statement opposing the European Union’s new regulations regarding New Genomic Techniques (NGTs). The SAS argues that NGT procedures are laboratory-based genetic modifications that result in genetically modified organisms (GMOs), despite recent EU regulations exempting NGT1 category plants from standard GMO risk assessments, traceability, and labeling requirements.

The Academy warns that NGT procedures can be DNA-damaging and unpredictable, suggesting that the current regulation should be withdrawn in favor of proper risk assessment and labeling. They contend that NGT1 plants are laboratory-made and indistinguishable from plants produced through conventional breeding, which may prevent consumers from making informed choices.

In contrast, the Slovak Breeding and Seed Association has expressed support for the implementation of the regulation. The association advocates for innovation and scientific dialogue rather than legal disputes, viewing the new framework as a way to advance agricultural development.
