Central European governments face rising budget deficits

Central European governments are facing significant fiscal challenges as budget deficits rise. In Slovakia, the Ministry of Finance confirmed that the state budget deficit exceeded 4 billion euros in September. The opposition movement KDH has criticized the 2027 budget proposal, which projects a deficit of 4.94 percent of GDP, arguing that public finances are not under control and that the government must prioritize responsible management over simply increasing the burden on citizens and businesses.

In the Czech Republic, Finance Minister Alena Schillerová is preparing plans for tax increases to address rising budget gaps. Critics note that the government's deficit is expected to grow significantly, potentially reaching 386 billion CZK next year. There are concerns regarding the effectiveness of these measures and whether they will successfully lead to long-term fiscal consolidation as promised to the European Commission.
