Slovak agropreneurs warn of food security risks

The Association of Landowners and Agropreneurs of Slovakia (ZVPAS) has issued an open letter to Minister of Agriculture Richard Takáč, warning of a deepening crisis in the national agricultural sector. The association, led by chairman Ján Jelen, cautioned that the current instability in primary production acts as a ‘time bomb’ that could eventually impact processors, retailers, and end consumers, threatening Slovakia’s food self-sufficiency and driving up food prices.

Farmers are reportedly facing dual pressures: massive revenue losses due to drought and rising input costs for fertilizers, seeds, and fuel, alongside heavy tax and levy burdens. To mitigate these effects, ZVPAS is calling for immediate stabilization measures, including the fair and transparent distribution of extraordinary fertilizer aid and making green diesel contributions accessible to the entire primary production sector.

The association has proposed systemic solutions such as targeted compensation for drought-related crop damage and preferential bridging loans for purchasing seeds.
