Slovak authorities issue safety guidelines for wild boar encounters

The State Veterinary and Food Administration of the Slovak Republic (ŠVPS SR) has issued safety recommendations for individuals encountering wild boars in forests or near residential areas. Experts emphasize that most wild animals prefer to avoid direct human contact, and the primary goal for safety is to prevent provoking an attack.

Key safety guidelines include:

• Avoid panic and running: Do not run away or make sudden movements. Instead, speak calmly to let the animal register your presence and slowly back away to increase distance. • Do not provoke: Avoid shouting, making hysterical noises, or throwing stones and branches at the animal, as these actions can be perceived as threats. • Respect space: Do not attempt to approach the animal out of curiosity or try to pass closely by it.

Experts warn that the highest risk involves sows with young piglets, as maternal instincts may cause a female to attack if she feels her offspring are threatened. It is critical never to place oneself between a mother and her young. Additionally, dog owners are advised to keep pets on leashes in and around forested areas to prevent dangerous encounters.
