Slovak banks implement mortgage assistance for rising rates

Banks in Slovakia have begun implementing a mortgage assistance program designed to help clients facing increased monthly payments following interest rate refixations. This initiative follows the termination of a state-funded program by the Ministry of Finance, which has transitioned the obligation to the commercial banking sector.

Under the scheme, banks such as Tatra banka and ČSOB are offering to return a portion of the increased payment amount. For example, Tatra banka provides assistance covering 75% of the difference between the original and new monthly installments, capped at 150 EUR per month.

However, there are strict deadlines for retroactive claims. Clients who submitted applications by July 31, 2026, were eligible for retroactive payments dating back to December 2025. Those applying later may only receive assistance for a single month retrospectively. The assistance program is scheduled to remain available until November 30, 2027.
