Slovak communities address school commute safety and traffic

In Slovakia, local communities are addressing challenges related to school commutes, focusing on safety, traffic congestion, and sustainable transport.

In Košice, students at Trebišovská 10 Primary School participated in the ‘Walking to School on Your Own’ project as part of the LIFE IP initiative. Through field mapping, students identified hazards such as damaged sidewalks, poor visibility at intersections, and improperly parked vehicles. The project also involved monitoring air quality and traffic volume during morning rush hours, particularly on Popradská Street, to highlight the link between transportation, air quality, and health.

Meanwhile, in Piešťany, residents have raised concerns regarding morning traffic jams caused by parents dropping children off directly at school entrances. Critics argue that allowing cars to queue to reach the door creates unnecessary congestion, suggesting that dropping children off a short distance away would improve traffic flow. Similar issues regarding school-related traffic and a shift away from walking to school have been noted in Nové Mesto nad Váhom.
