Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák Advances €62m Kukurica Renovation
Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák is supervising a major reconstruction of the former military building known as “Kukurica” and an adjoining smaller structure (object 27) in Slovakia. The main 25‑storey building has incurred almost €50 million in construction costs, with additional spending on interior fit‑out and perimeter fencing. A separate contract worth €11.8 million was awarded to Adifex to refurbish the neighbouring two‑storey annex, add parking, reinforced areas, fencing and complete an underground passage linking the two buildings, with design work slated for completion in 2025.
The projects have sparked criticism from opposition politicians who question the high expenses and the secrecy of procurement. Critics have highlighted costly items such as marble tiles, a large display screen and wall renovations, while the minister has presented price lists to argue the costs are justified. The controversy continues to dominate media coverage of the defence ministry’s spending.
