Slovak Extraliga hockey salaries rise to compete with Europe
The economic landscape of the Slovak Tipsport Extraliga has shifted significantly over the last five years, making the league more competitive with top European competitions. According to Finnish official Elmo Aittola, who has managed teams in Michalovce and Spišská Nová Ves, salary levels for both domestic and foreign players have risen.
Currently, average salaries for Slovak players range between 45,000 and 50,000 euros per season, while foreign legionnaires earn approximately 60,000 euros. On a monthly basis during the playing season, this equates to roughly 5,500 to 6,500 euros. Aittola notes that these conditions are now comparable to or better than many German clubs.
One factor contributing to this attractiveness is the lower tax burden in Slovakia. For a player receiving 100,000 euros net, the total cost to a club in Slovakia is approximately 120,000 euros, whereas in countries like Germany, Finland, or Sweden, the total cost including taxes and social contributions would approach 200,000 euros. However, Aittola warns that the league's image is occasionally damaged by clubs that delay player payments or frequently rotate foreign players.
