Slovak Finance Minister rejects debt criticism

Slovak Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický has rejected criticism from the Council for Budget Responsibility (RRZ) regarding the failure to present measures to reduce national debt. Kamenický characterized the Council's stance as ‘political activism,’ arguing that the Ministry of Finance has been actively consolidating public finances for three years.

The Ministry intends to submit the formal debt-reduction document to the National Council of the Slovak Republic alongside the proposed state budget. This follows warnings from the RRZ that the government violated constitutional law by not immediately presenting measures after the 2025 debt figures were published. The Council noted that Slovakia's gross debt reached 61.4% of GDP at the end of 2025, remaining in the highest sanction zone of the debt brake, with projections suggesting it could exceed 75% of GDP by 2030 without new interventions.
