Slovak football stars clash with official over youth coach criticism

A conflict has erupted in Slovak football following controversial remarks by Arpád Benovič, chairman of the Dunajská Streda Regional Football Union. Amidst a broader financial crisis involving blocked state subsidies and unpaid wages, Benovič questioned the value of youth academy coaches, suggesting they act merely as childcare and questioning the quality of the players they produce.

These comments drew sharp criticism from several prominent Slovak national team players. Dávid Hancko, a defender for Atlético Madrid, defended the coaches, stating that the issue is a lack of respect for their work rather than a surplus of personnel. Martin Dúbravka, goalkeeper for Tottenham, and Lukáš Haraslín, playing for Al Fateh, also expressed their support for the coaches who provided the foundations for their professional careers.

The situation has intensified following a tense Slovak Football Association conference, with experts describing the official's stance as despotic.
