Slovak guides advise on muscat balcony care and rock‑garden annual planting

Muscat (Pelargonium x hortorum) remain one of the most popular balcony plants in Slovakia. Experts recommend pruning to influence density and vitality, ensuring full sun exposure on south‑ or west‑facing balconies, keeping the substrate moist but not water‑logged, using a balanced fertilizer for flowering plants, and regularly removing spent blooms to prolong the flowering period. While some gardeners add diluted beer (one part beer to five parts water) to the watering mix for its mineral and B‑vitamin content, specialists warn that beer is not a substitute for proper fertilizer and can promote fungal growth, attract ants and other pests if over‑used.

Rock‑garden (skalka) design also thrives in Slovak gardens. Historically inspired by alpine plantings, modern rock gardens can be enlivened with hardy annuals such as Brachycome iberidifolia, Diascia barberae, Phacelia campanularia and Lobularia maritima. These species favour sunny, relatively dry spots, tolerate poor soils, and provide long‑lasting colour while attracting pollinators. Proper site selection, minimal watering, and occasional feeding with suitable horticultural products are sufficient for vigorous growth.
