Slovak households hold 53 billion euros in savings amid inflation concerns

Slovak households hold approximately 53.4 billion euros in bank accounts and cash, according to the National Bank of Slovakia. This amount is more than double the 23.5 billion euros invested in assets such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and crypto-assets. Only about 11% of households are active investors.

High inflation rates have significantly eroded the purchasing power of these savings. Between 2022 and 2025, cumulative inflation has resulted in a loss of roughly one-quarter of the value of non-interest-bearing cash. For example, 10,000 euros held in 2022 would have the purchasing power of approximately 7,500 euros by the end of 2025.

In a related economic observation, fuel prices in Slovakia have recently been noted as lower than in the neighboring Czech Republic. This price discrepancy has drawn criticism regarding Czech public finances and the rising deficit under the current administration.
