Igor Matovič incident sparks debate over state protection laws

An incident at a political meeting in Bytča involving Igor Matovič, leader of Hnutie Slovensko, has prompted calls for legislative changes regarding state protection for politicians. During the event, a confrontation occurred between Matovič and a senior citizen, which resulted in undercover police officers intervening and the man being taken to a station. Matovič claims the man was under the influence of alcohol and that the police acted legally, while the senior's family reported minor injuries.

Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok has responded by proposing amendments to the law that would allow the state to withdraw protection from individuals who deliberately provoke conflicts or fail to follow security protocols. The Minister criticized Matovič for inciting tension and noted that the Director of the Office for the Protection of Constitutional Officials has already called on Matovič to adhere to the parliamentary code of ethics.

Additionally, the Minister condemned online hate speech directed at the police officers involved in the intervention. Matovič’s security was originally granted following the assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico, and the government is now debating whether such privileges should be contingent on the behavior of the protected person.
