Slovak Interior Minister Šutaj Eštok condemns EU silence on Hungary's democratic crackdown

Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok warned that the European Union and the European Commission remain silent about unprecedented actions in Hungary, including the dismissal of the president, retroactive limits on parliamentary terms and interference in public broadcasting. He described the situation as a “silence” that is “deafening,” pointing out that neither EU officials nor commissioners are conducting any checks on the developments.

Šutaj compared the current Hungarian measures to previous Slovak experiences when EU monitoring was active, stressing that the lack of scrutiny now allows the Hungarian government to further erode the rule of law without external pressure.
