Slovak judicial proceedings continue for Mikuláš Černák and Samuel Straško

In Slovakia, two distinct high-profile criminal cases are progressing through the judicial system.

Life-sentenced former underworld boss Mikuláš Černák has entered into a new plea agreement. The proceedings are being conducted under the 1961 Penal Code, as the offenses occurred prior to 2006. This follows a legal dispute regarding his potential parole; the Trnava Regional Court previously overturned a decision by the Trnava District Court that had denied parole requests made by Černák and the Restart – New Life association. Černák was originally sentenced to life imprisonment in 2009 for his involvement in multiple murders between 1994 and 1997.

Separately, the trial of Samuel Straško, the defendant in the violent attack at a high school in Spišská Stará Ves, is approaching its conclusion. Closing arguments are scheduled to take place at the Specialized Criminal Court in Pezinok. During his testimony, the 19-year-old defendant denied premeditating the attack, claiming he was in a state of mental distress and intended to use a knife for self-harm rather than an assault. He admitted to attacking a school official and a student during the incident.
